Digital Camcorders

Does anyone out there own a digital camcorder? We plan to buy one before we go to China, but when I look at all the different types I'm a bit lost. Should we get MiniDV, Digital8, Digital DVD, etc... Amazon has a pretty cool little format guide. But I was hoping to get some feedback from some people who have digital camcorders and find out what they like and don't like about them.

Any feedback?

I am thinking of getting one I saw at Sams for $199.
With our first bio kids we bought one for 700 bucks and it died with in a year :O
So I am nervous about them LOL.
Can't wait to see what people post :D

Nope. Don't got one. Sorry.

However, I was seriously amused by the fact that you will have a camera in China because whenever you see an asian tourist in the US (mainly Japanese and Chinese), they excusively have digital camcorders. without them, it's like they lose a piece of their asianoicty. :) I love it.

btw, I haven't been to this blog. it's really awesome that you are looking to adopt. my wife and I intend to adopt a few children also, but that will come in the future.

good for you mark! good luck!

We've found it really pays to buy small electronics that you carry around (cameras, ipod, car stereo w/removeable face plate, etc) at Best Buy, and pay the little extra for the service plan. We've had a few things like that break, and when they do if they can't fix them (usually they can't), they give you the purchase price plus whatever is left on the rest of the service plan toward the purchase of a new one. It's like getting an upgrade, because the models usually get better and cheaper over time.

But, depending on where you are going to fly into China, maybe you should research them here, get to know brands and models you'd like, and buy it over there? A friend from Vietnam finances trips home every other year by buying stuff there that he resells here. Maybe you could get a better price there?
