2 New Teeth

Kaylee has two teeth on the top and two on the bottom. We just noticed that she has two new teeth coming in on both sides of her bottom teeth.

Can someone tell me how this teething thing works? My understanding is that teething is the discomfort and pain a baby experiences when new teeth come in, right? But aren't new teeth coming in for a long, long time? It's not like all of the teeth come in at the same time. So does that mean that babies experience teething from the time the first tooth comes in until the last? And is there pain during certain stages of the tooth coming in? It seems to me, there should be some pain and discomfort during the entire time the tooth is coming in. But that doesn't appear to be the case.

Any advice on how this works? What about medicine - what kind and how often?

Oh yeah, I even heard that teething could cause the lovely smell of a poopy diaper to intensify. Now that just doesn't make sense!

We are celebrating because our spicy girl, Hana, has finished teething. They are all in! Moxie posted some great advice. The breaking through of teeth seemed to affect Hana the worse and Motrin was our medicine of choice. You can see the swollen gums and tips of teeth when they break through...those molars are the worse, but then you are done. Because teething babies put everything and anything into their mouths, the babies are very likely to get cold viruses. Have fun with your first teething experience.
Kaylee looks wonderful and she is growing right before our eyes. Hana is doing the same!
I am having an adoption movie made of our trip to bring Hana home. Can not wait to see the finished product (Daphne, Changsha, etc.)

We're going through the same thing at the moment. Alisha's one bottom tooth has been through for a while. The second bottom tooth has been nearly through for a while, but I think it's just popped through now. One of her top teeth has just popped through now too. Her top gums have been bolging a bit. It's hard to really know if the baby is experiencing discomfort with teeth moving in the gums or when it's only when they actually pop through. The chewing on things is the best and natural way to help, I guess, to relieve the discomfort. I recommend anything and everything safe to chew on, LOL. We had a teething ring that was soft with liquid inside it that you left in the fridge so it was cold. They quite liked that. I have no idea where it is now. We've been lucky, we haven't had much problems with teething. There's only a few times I remember with the boys where we had to get them up and give them Pamol and/or Bonjela. I don't know if you get Bonjela over there, but it's quite good as it numbs the gum where you apply it. It's just a gel you rub on the gum to relieve pain. We only ever gave them it if they were upset - which wasn't that often.

I think you can get it from the supermarket or ask at a chemist maybe.

I've also heard that nappies are unpleasent. I never noticed that with the first two. I'm not sure if it is just coincidental or if it is due to teething. I've also heard that they get more runny noses.

Anyway hope Kaylee is okay with it and not suffering too much. Some babies don't suffer much, then others go through a lot.

Take Care & God Bless!

Hi - Sounds like terrific advice here! It's been awhile since I've been through the teething phase. I used baby motrin as well and liked that as well as baby orajel. Unfortunately, my kids also got those diaper rashes associated with teething. Don't be alarmed if it happens, and if it does, one of the best remedies for that is to remove the diaper for a little while the air helps expediate the healing! One more thing, my children also liked to chew on cool teethers so I would put them in the refridgerator inbetween uses. Most teethers can run through the dishwasher which is nice. Gerber makes a teething biscuit that most children enjoy chewing on as well! (Beware if you use these, because your darling child will end up very dirty! LOL) All my kids liked those. Good luck. I posted this in the guestbook, but i will leave it here as well
When my daughter teethed, she drooled alot but the first 4 or 5 front teeth were the only ones that seemed to bother her pain wise until her molars came in. The molars were worse for her than the front teeth. I found that to be the norm in all the babies in my mothers group. Once she started getting her teeth the rest came in within 4 months or so. Abby never had diaper rash from swallowing the copius amounts of drool b/c she let it go down her shirt instead. I think it depends on the child. We used infants tylenol and baby oragel for her pain.
Although i dont know you, i have to say again congratulations, she is beautiful! children are the best

If ANY doctor tells you that a teething does not cause a diaper rash tell him/her to go soak their collective heads!!!

My daughter breezed through teething and surprised us when we discovered she had teeth.

My son is a WHOLE NEW KETTLE OF FISH. His fanny is flaming red, he has diarrhea and sometimes gets sores and the amazing thing is AFTER the teeth show up the diaper rash is gone. We have changed diapers every two hours and alternated Bag Balm (used for cow udders), Desitin, Neosporin and what actually seems to work the best (especially with the sores) Lotrim (for atheletes foot) but the red fanny persists until he pops the tooth.

He is currently suffering through 2 year molars at 2 1/2, so I am able to actually talk to him about it. We are also in the middle of potty training and I hope he trains faster because it can only help.

It will get better I know it but I suffer everytime he crys and I know the cause but can't help.

Try and find Hyland's Teething Tablets at your pharmacy or supermarket or health food store. They're little tabs that melt in the mouth and relieve the pain very well. And they're 100% safe. Check 'em out at eopinions.com if you don't have any friends who have used them.

My son had a really difficult time with teething. His little gums would bulge, the tooth would barely break the skin, and then the gum would swell back up over the tooth again! He had low-grade temps and runny noses and was very fussy. The pain relievers and cool teethers helped somewhat. None of my children ever had diaper rash during teething, but the previous poster, Tina, who described her son's diaper rash, leads me to believe that he had a yeast infection; especially since he had a flaming red bottom that responded to Lotrimin (an anti-fungal). For those kinds of diaper rash, if your baby is old enough, yogurt with live active cultures will help tremendously. As for how long it bothers a baby for their teeth coming through, I think it might be an individual, case by case thing, but is probably the worst right when the tooth is actually breaking through the skin. By the way, your daughter is beautiful. God bless your family.

Thanks for all of the great reply's (and the kind words).

The two new teeth on the bottom are in (total of 4). She has had 2 teeth up top for a long time but we noticed several weeks ago that it looked like two more were coming in on both sides. But they still look the same. Sort of like they are waiting to break through.
