10 Things I've Learned in 48 Hours
- January 25th, 2005

Here are 10 things that I have learned in the past 48 hours...

1. I am lightning fast at detecting a poopy diaper
2. I am even faster at getting mommy to come to the rescue
3. Clearing a baby's nose can be an adventure
4. I enjoy rating Kaylee's burps on a scale of 1 to 10
5. The term "onesie" is not a reference to an age
6. Watching cartoons in Chinese is a lot of fun
7. The people of Changsha are very friendly
8. Baby's heads are hard. Especially when they hit you in the lip
9. I am crazy for Kaylee
10. God has blessed us beyond measure

Well, Naomi is downstairs getting a massage. They have a really nice spa here at the hotel. For $15 US dollars you can get a 90 minute massage. She should get one every day. She deserves it.

I am here with Kaylee. She woke up a little while ago and I fed her. She is laying on the bed just entertaining herself. She likes to stare at her hands. She crosses her fingers and then just looks at them. She turns her hand around and stares some more. She won't play with any toys. But she keeps herself busy by examining her own hands and fingers. Dr. Su said she probably has never had any toys. Kaylee is still learning to grip things. She can grab my finger, but I can't get her to hold anything yet. But we are working on it.

Before Naomi left for her massage, I went to the local grocery store for supplies. It's called The Wacko Store. Perfect for our group! :-) The people working there seem to really enjoy helping us. The language barrier is tough, but they work hard to understand what we need and they are very friendly. Naomi had asked me to get her some salt. So before I left, I went to the check in counter at our hotel and I asked one of the girls to write down "salt" for me in Chinese. The people at the check in counter speak some english, but it is limited. She wasn't sure what I meant and after trying several ways to tell her she got a big smile on her face and said "sugar!" Close. So I tried again but she wasn't sure. She then asked a couple of other people and before I knew it they had a large group of people trying to understand what I needed. It was a lot of fun. Finally, a young man stepped in and asked me to write it down on paper. He took the paper over to a computer and typed in the word SALT. Then he looked to the group and said the Chinese word for it. Everyone reacted with big smiles, laughs, and a look of excitement. They all crowded around as one of them wrote the Chinese word for it on a piece of paper for me. Then, they all sent me on my way as I left for the store. What a great group of people. We are really enjoying the people here in Changsha! From what we have seen, Kaylee comes from a region that has very friendly folks!

A quick note about the price of things at the store. For approximately $10 US dollars I bought the following: 28 diapers, a case of bottled water, a bag of salt, two packs of Kleenex, and 5 Pepsi's.

Big news! Daphne stopped by earlier and took our order for dinner. They are delivering Pizza Hut! Whoooo Hooo! No fried rice!

I better go. Kaylee is calling...
