Good (Thursday) Morning
- January 26th, 2005
Welcome
to the world of fatherhood. I think that was what Kaylee was
trying to tell me at 2 O'clock in the morning. She woke up
right at midnight again for her feeding. Perfect. Just like
clockwork. She drank her bottle and went right to sleep again.
But then sometime around 2:00am I heard something that woke
me. I laid there for a few minutes and sure enough, she started
crying. Naomi and I both got up and tried to comfort her.
Her diaper did not need changing and she did not appear to
have a fever or show signs of sickness. But she was just a
little cranky and restless. We finally put her in the bed
between us and Naomi eventually fell asleep but Kaylee and
I were wide awake. Eventually I laid her on a big pillow and
carried her to the hallway outside of our bathroom. There
is a little night light there. Kaylee and I laid on the ground
and looked at each other all night. She just would not sleep.
Around 5:00am I changed her diaper. Naomi got up to check
on us. That put a smile right on Kaylee's face. Kaylee just
loves Naomi. It's so awesome. I can play with Kaylee and she
will have a great time. But the minute she see's Naomi she
gets this big smile, sticks out her tongue, and starts to
laugh. It's neat to see little Kaylee get excited when she
see's Naomi. Well, I gave Kaylee a bottle of warm water and
within minutes she was asleep. Same with Naomi. No bottle
for her. But fast asleep.
Daphne
told everyone that we might have nights like this for a little
while. She said that it is possible that the babies will have
memories that upset them. I'm sure that waking up in a strange
room is a bit scary. And the truth is we still look funny
to her. We talk funny. And well, we probably smell a little
funny too.
It's
now 7:45am on Thursday morning. I've taken a shower and my
two girls are still sleeping.
Yesterday
Naomi began to feel sick. Maybe a bad cold or the beginning
of a flu. She started taking her medicine. I hope she sleeps
for a while this morning.
I
will wait for her to wake up and then I am heading down to
the second floor to get some breakfast. Yes! I'll have an
omelet. Well done please. I might grab a few rolls and some
fried rice. If I am still hungry I'll have some dim sum. We
have learned that the key to eating here in China is to load
up on the breakfast. Otherwise you take a chance with the
rest of the meals. So far we have enjoyed the food. But we
are cautiously paranoid. We feel comfortable with the breakfast
so we eat a lot. But we usually go light on the rest of the
meals. BTW, the pizza last night was not so good. I think
they forgot to put the tomato sauce on it.
Today
there is an optional trip to an embroidery factory. They say
it's very interesting and there is plenty of shopping opportunities.
We will have to wait to see how everyone feels. We skipped
the shopping trip yesterday because Naomi and Kaylee were
sick so we might have to skip today's trip as well.
I
will try to find some time to take pictures of the area surrounding
the hotel. It is fascinating. Traffic is crazy. Even the cabs
in NY follow certain directional guidelines. But here the
cars just seem to turn in any direction they choose. You have
to be extremely careful when you are out walking. I've seen
several people on bikes pulling old carts. And I saw a man
walking down the street holding on to two long handles pulling
a cart. There are a lot of bikes. But what is interesting
is they are old, raggedy, and look like they were built in
the 40's.
I
hope you don't mind me rambling on. These emails are more
for my benefit than for those I send them to. I find it very
helpful to be able to write down my thoughts. This whole experience
is a bit overwhelming and I guess this is my way of relaxing
a little.
It
sounds like the girls are waking up...
