What's a Blog?

What's a blog? Well, the word blog is short for weblog. And a weblog is basically a journal on the web. So a blog is a web based journal. Sort of...

But blogging is more than just keeping an online journal. It's a way to connect with others who share similar interests. It takes some work, but with a little bit of effort, just about any blog out there can find groups of similar blogs to interact with. And the way most bloggers end up connecting with each other is through link sharing and through comments.

Most blogs allow visitors to post comments on their site. So when someone reads something that interests them, they can leave a comment on that post. And as you can imagine, this is a great way to build relationships with other bloggers. Another way to build relationships is by link sharing. When you find blogs that interest you, simply put a link to them on your site. The owner of the other blog will know that you have linked to them through their web statistics report. When they see that you've linked to them they will probably visit your site. And if they like it, they might reciprocate with a link back to you on their site. This link sharing goes on and on until you eventually end up connected with many different blogs. And over time, you build relationships with these other bloggers.

There are several great blog tools available. Blogger and Movable Type are two of the most popular. One of the cool things about Blogger is that they have a scaled down version called BlogSpot. You can set up a blog on BlogSpot in just a matter of minutes. And the best part? It's free and easy to use! But Movable Type and Blogger are the preferred choice if you have a hosting account, a domain name, and a small amount of technical know-how.

For those of you who are thinking about starting your own blog, I need to warn you that it can be very addicting! You'll soon find that you can't walk past your computer without wanting to check in and see if anyone has left any new comments. And you'll want to surf on over to your favorite blog sites to see if they've made any new posts. And hey, that's what makes blogging so much fun! But don't say I didn't warn you!

Well, that's a brief description of what blogging is all about. I hope you enjoy my blog and I look forward to reading your comments...
